According to a report from business intelligence firm Kaspersky Lab and published by Forbes, cyber extortion attempts have jumped by 177% in just two years.
Cyber extortionists primarily target small businesses, who often don’t have sophisticated security practices in place. What makes them vulnerable is that they usually rely on one or two employees with access to sensitive business data. And because these smaller firms may be less aware of cyber threats and what precautions need to be taken, they are prime targets for cyber criminals looking for quick money.

There are multiple types of cyber extortions – financial and non-financial, with or without legal action. Don’t rush to pay

Keep all correspondence and reports related to your cyber extortion experience so that your law enforcement agency will be able to investigate it as efficiently as possible. Use strong passwords for your online accounts, anti-virus software and firewall protection also include two-factor authentication when possible. Never click on links or open attachments from unknown senders. Make sure that you are using an updated operating system and that your computer has regular security updates.
